Haluk Cobanoglu / Bird Fanciers Of Istanbul
In Istanbul, bird fanciers gather in bird-bazaars set up in some historical sites of the city on weekends to demonstrate and swap their birds. Pigeon breeding is one of the most ancient hobbies in the Middle East,
performed only and only by men.
These pigeon breeders are mainly poor Turks,Kurds,Arabs and Gypsies, believing in the good luck brought by these birds which assumed to be holly creatures in the Muslim religion.

They seem to seek the freedom which they have lost through facing the severe economical and social difficulities of the city-life, over the wings of these birds.By the end of the day, the bird fanciers return to their houses as the birds return to their dovecotes.
