Haluk Cobanoglu / New York Subway/ The City Underground
New York; the first stop for immigrants, the first point for the American Dream, the city of ethnic diversity, the scoop of the “ melting-pot”. Where only the rich get fused while the outcasts are aptly alienated… the “epicenter” of the global village, as designated in the formal jargon…with tourists of 5th Avenue dizzy…while marvelling at the skyscrapers and … all blind for the homeless, nestled desparately at fringe corners further ahead , the Harlem and its African-Americans. Italian and China Towns … back to back and…far away, ghettos of the Puerto Ricans and the Poles…
Finally the Russian hamlet and its “Little Odessa…”

Under the ground; the giant iron cobweb: the subway wowen hundred years ago carrying over 3.7 million people every 365 days and all 24 hours, crossing the sea at some points over the bridges and through the tunnels with 468 stations and spanning 842 miles… and indegenous but marginal human figures coerced to the subterranean world ejected by the socio-economic fabric and seeking freedom through the darkness: a cluster of musicians, showmen, rockers, beggars, drug addicts…

NEW YORK SUBWAY / THE CITY UNDERGROUND (1997-1998) is a documentary story on this human landscape.
